
Buffett announced that he will spend more than 80 percent of his money to foundations that support charitable causes. In 2020, he boosted that percentage to 99 percent. The primary beneficiary was the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which was founded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his then wife Melinda, which was primarily is focused on global education and health; Bill and Buffett had maintained a close relationship since the beginning of the 1990s. Other organizations that received donations were those run by Buffett's children and the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation named after his late wife. This foundation focuses on reproductive health of women and provided scholarships for college. In 2010, Buffett and Gates came up with the Giving Pledge. This pledge also encouraged other wealthy individuals to give a large portion of their fortunes to charitable organizations.
